Students for AIM Australia
Australian students studying Nursing, Public Health, Nutrition and Social Work came to Mexico for a month long international experience. The program consisted of 36 hours of academic lectures by ULSA staff and guest lecturers covering topics such National Health Care plans and policies Elderly care , Medical Tourism, Traditional Medicine and Community Health Care. Students participated in over 30 hours of professional visits to private and public Hospitals, Health centers, and Clinics. Students exercised with elderly at an old age home, participated in a local community health fair, visited the oldest running hospital in the Americas dating back to 1524, assisted with patients at a small rehab clinic and even watched a C section and a natural child birth at the local public hospital. Many students commented on how participating in this program has been a life changing experience and would recommend this program highly.
A group of students from various universities in Australia spent four weeks at ULSA studying Spanish and taking Mexican History and Culture classes. Students learnt to appreciate Mexican culture though the eight sessions of classes that touched on topics such as Pre hispanic culture, the Mexican Revolution and Contemporary Mexico. The Spanish language component was 45 hours of classes in small groups, based on their level of Spanish. During this period, students focused on the ability to communicate ideas of everyday life and emphasis was given on oral practice and vocabulary. The last day of classes was an opportunity to deliver a presentation to fellow students. These included a talk on Mexican gastronomy that included a recipe book and some samples of typical Mexican food. Their practice of the Spanish language was enriched by the cultural visits to important sites in Mexico City and the outskirts such as: the Historic Downtown Center, Coyoacán, the Basilica of Guadalupe, Xochimilco and the pyramids of Teotihuacan, as well as a variety of museums.
