CASA ROSA, THE "PINK HOUSE"

For over 77 years, No. 19  La Paz Street, now known as, Francisco Murguia, was the home of the Anda y Flores family. Engineer Manuel de Anda y Barreda built the house between 1913 and 1914.

15th of 1994, the “Casa Rosa” was officially inaugurated. Remodeling and redesigning of the house was done trying to save as much as possible the details that gave grandeur to constructions of the beginning of the 20th Century.  The outside balconies and wrought ironwork followed the influence of Art Nouveau. The interiors are French neoclassic, beautifully decorated with details in plaster cast all along the cieling, as well as in framed panels. The dining room had a large rounded stained glass window made by the famous Italian artist, Pelandinni [1], based on Mr. De Anda’s design.

The distribution of the house is between, the formal gallery of the 19th century colonial architecture, and the functional distribution that followed the cultural change of customs as a result of the Industrial Revolution, such as: electricity, running water system, automobile. This means that rooms were connected to each other as well as with with common spaces by adding entry ways that allowed the integration or separation of rooms as one wished, which was a big change in the architecture of the twenties. Moreover, steel beams and reinforced concrete were used in the construction, not quite common materials at that period.

There is one restored room in particular that received the acknowledgement of the original owners: the sewing room. Originally designed and built especially for his wife by Mr. De Anda, by using high and low relief techniques, in mouldings and painting, the decoration of the room appears to be a trellis complete with climbing plants and swallows.
